Plumbing the System
Dutch Pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition
The exhibition Plumbing the System featured the work of architect Jan Jongert and cartographer Carlijn Kingma. The connecting concept between the two oeuvres is plumbing, defective flows that need fixing. In the work of Jongert this appears in a literal way, as he works on reducing rainwater runoff in urban environments with low-cost water-preserving green roofs. Kingma draws out intricate illustrated visualizations of the flows of money in the neoliberal capitalist present.
The exhibition is designed as a workshop, and the graphic design plays along with this concept. The playful typography that literally moves in the animated images, and that recalls the notion of movement in the static images, refers to the process of un-clogging and the resumed flow of water.
