Het Paleis van Typografisch Metselwerk in Grote Kerk Breda
The Palace of Typographic Masonry is an ongoing project initiated by Richard Niessen that builds a subjective archiving system for the craft of graphic design. The many "rooms of the palace", representing topics and aspects of graphic design, show collections of examples and objects, essays and comissioned works that reflect on the collections. The rooms are manifested as a series of unfolding custom cabinets that can be transported and set up in different spaces.
For the exhibition of the Palace in the Grote Kerk of Breda Richard Niessen picked out nine details and artefacts in the church building that connect the building to the main rooms of the Palace. I was honored to be asked to create illustrations of these artefacts and design the publication in which these connections were presented. The publication is a series of lose poster sized black and white illustrations folded together, creating new image combinations and connections on each spread. The typefaces used for the descriptions are Saggi and an early sketch of what became LNT Natalia.
